By Rex Dickerson

It is a myth that a business can be 100% loved and esteemed. This is true both on the internet and off of it. It does not matter how good your company is, you are always going to have to deal with naysayers. It is what you do when you find out that criticism that is vital. When you are running a business on the internet this is especially vital mainly because people aren't going to have as many chances to interact with you personally to help counteract the negative opinions they see. These are the things you need to do.

Respond to the criticism as fast as you are able to. You should not underestimate how vital this is. It's not a good idea to let a poor critique to be unresponded to. Tell him or her that you're considering it and ask them for permission to discuss their issues privately. This demonstrates to people that your first concern is creating the best product possible and that you don't react poorly to reviews. This should help you earn a great deal of respect.

Actually take at least a few moments investigating the criticism and determining whether or not you need to do any type of correcting. People can tell the difference between trolls and genuine review. "You suck" doesn't merit your response.

It is important, however, to take a look at things like "the format is wonky" or "there is a 404 page where the about page must be." Check everything out and if the change is something you need (or want) to make, make it. This demonstrates that you pay attention and will do something when you really need to.

Every answer you give must be personalized. Should you decide to make a change or a fix, tell the individual who published the feedback that you are making the changes they requested you to make. Additionally, it is good to publish something like this publicly. It demonstrates that you don't have an anger response if you are criticized.

It demonstrates that you are willing to do the work you must do to give people what they need. This is clever, even though you may decide against making alterations people have asked for. Let them know that you checked things out but chose not to act. Be sure you clarify why this is.

Keep in mind that, above all else, how you react to critique is about reputation management. If you fire back at somebody for saying something unfavorable about you, you look petty. If you dismiss criticism and merely keep insisting that everything is great, you will look like you do not know your business well. Keep your pride in check. People, generally, aren't attacking you personally. They didn't have a satisfying experience with your product. This means that you should improve the product so that they won't have a repeat of that same experience.

The way in which you address criticism says a great deal about you and about your biz. Keep positive with it the best you can!
