There Are The Tornado Shelters Arkansas Homeowners Use To Keep Themselves Together

By Janet Meyer

If you live in the Southern States of the United States, you know about tornados. You know they can be very dangerous and appear almost without warning, especially if you are not paying attention. Many home owners prepare shelters for these so they will not have problems and their families and friends can escape unharmed. The tornado shelters Arkansas residents use can be a good idea for you also.

There are, of course, any number of companies that will help you design and build one of these invaluable shelters. Some firms and other neighbors will have prefabricated ones available for purchase and all you need to do is buy it, dig a big hole and drop it in. This will save a lot of trouble, but not some of the fun of putting your own together. Looking at some of the things you need to think about will help you in this task.

Once a weather condition sends you down into your shelter, you will not be able to come out for a while. That means that all of the food, water, medical care and entertainment you bring down will be all you have. Planning this may take some time, but you will have a safe place for you and your family.

Dehydrated food is usually the best choice when it comes to storing enough food for everyone in your family. This is prepared and sealed in waterproof packages and easy to store and rehydrate when it is time to eat. The only thing you need is enough water to make breakfast, lunch and dinner when it is time. There are many menu items available and finding the things that everyone likes is fairly easy ahead of time.

Your need for water is well known. The average person needs about a gallon per day. You will need a little for each meal, especially if you use dehydrated foods. Reducing your bathing requirements will help preserve water for drinking and cooking purposes. Five gallon jugs or a large storage container will help keep this vital liquid clean and safe for use.

Medical supplies are critical as well. The first aid kit that is available in many grocery or home improvement stores will serve as an example of what it is you need. Just load up on more of each item, concentrating on bandages for small cuts and also include disinfectant wipes. Making sure you have all regular medicines anyone in your party takes should round out your immediate needs.

The entertainment opportunities you include will reflect your passions and interests. Board games are a good idea and paper as well as pencils, pens and crayons should be included in that box that no electricity is needed for. There will probably not be any electricity or Internet so low tech is the way to think.

One of the most important things you can take down in a shelter is a radio with plenty of batteries. A hand crank type will be the best as there is no need to try and charge the batteries and, occasionally, the batteries do not last very long anyway. You will want to keep track of the developing weather conditions so you know what is happening and when it stops happening.
