The Veteran Student Life

By Jim Thorpe

College can be a difficult and stressful time for all students, and learning to balance the stresses of college can be extremely difficult, but is infinitely important to each student. Veterans in particular have a great opportunity to expand their knowledge and manage the stresses of college as they seek to return to civilian life after serving in the military.

The particular challenges that come for student veterans can be combatted and overcome by the many benefits that are available for veteran students. Learning to use the resources available is an extremely important part of becoming a successful veteran student, and using your time wisely in college.

You may have changed but they will still think that you are the old you. Often times people who served feel like they are in a different level emotionally with their old friends who don't have the same experiences from serving. Be understanding and when necessary, have a discussion designed to help both parties understand better.

You can be in the heat of service to back home in about a day. This is not nearly enough time to adjust back into the swing of things. Don't feel pressured to rush back into to things or to take demands to do things you aren't ready for. You are number one and you need to take the time that you need to adjust yourself. The time that it takes can change from person to person so don't compare yourself to how others are doing.

If you know friends or family who have given service, then consider going to go visit them. Personally expressing to those close to you some gratitude can mean so much to them. If you don't personally know anyone, then consider going to a Veterans hospital or even have your little kids write him or her a letter of appreciation. Small tokens of gratitude can leave those that have served the United States with a feeling that outlasts their day.

There is little in this world deserving more respect than our veterans, and the time has come for veterans to be compensated and recognized for the things they have learned in the service of their country. Each veteran has a pool of experience from which they draw that is not available for any other person in the country or the world.

The unique experiences of each veteran have prepared them for their life, and as they are able to complete their education they will increase their own opportunities and the opportunities of their families. As we strive to recognize our veterans more fully, it is important to support them through their educational endeavors. As veterans have sacrificed their time and a significant portion of their lives to the safety and liberty of our country, they deserve the opportunity to become exactly what they want to be.

As veterans, there are many benefits that are available and should be taken advantage of. In addition to the educational opportunities, there are also va loans, va home loans, and va house loans to help veterans provide for their families in the best way possible. Veteran students are extremely important and should be supported in our society. Let's look to the future and support our veterans today.
