The Value Of Learning Styles Survey

By Carolyn King

Different learning styles determine how well one absorbs information or content. Understanding these methods is important to teachers because it helps them to avoid wasting time using an approach that will not bear results. Learning styles survey makes it easier to handle different pupils. A teacher will also maximize the contact hours between him and the pupil. This disparity is the reason some subjects are easier to tackle than others.

There are three main types of learners based on their natural style. They are auditory, visual and tactile learners. Most people use a combination of styles but one style takes prominence over the others. There are professionals who can assist you to determine the style best suited for each child. This makes it easier to deliver content as well as solve problems.

Surveys on learning methods are designed to establish the character of a learner. Some of the questions asked revolve around books read, easy or quick solutions when in a fix, how one acts in public, etc. A question on reaction in case of an emergency like attack by an animal will also reveal the true character. The answers given indicate the perspective such a person has about life.

Visual learners are a category that best absorb information from maps, charts and diagrams. Their minds work by creating relationships or connections between information and images or techniques. This is their best way of remembering concepts taught in class. Long texts and narrations are always boring for this group. It is usually a waste of time to sit through narratives. Their solutions are based on diagrams or images.

Auditory learners understand what is taught by listening to presentations. Their memory of spoken words is excellent. Such a learner depends on listening and speaking to internalize and digest information. The eyes and mind of such a pupil might appear distance and distracted, but as long as he can hear what is being said, he understands it. These are the people who will repeat what was said word for word or ask a question on a subject you thought was being mentioned in passing.

Kinesthetic or tactile learners require active engagement to understand different concepts. They love to perform experiments or test what has been said. To them, ideas are clearer once performed. It is very boring for them to watch presentations or listen to unending speeches. Their way of communicating ideas and feelings is using body language. They best understand concepts by testing them.

Each class comprises of different types of learners. It is upon a teacher or facilitator to find a dynamic way of accommodating all of them. The best way is to consider the concepts being taught and thus find a way of delivering it effectively. A history or literature teacher can take care of different preferences by taking them on a tour to the theater or historical site.

Use professionally designed tests to identify the style. Some tests developed by amateurs will be misleading and thus affect delivery of content to students. Do not be restricted by the results to stick to one method. Determine the most appropriate approach depending on the concept being taught.
