Factors To Consider With A Family Emergency Plan

By Tammie Caldwell

Many people are concerned about their safety and that of their loved ones. Yet, there are three things to keep in mind when one is working on a family emergency plan. It is important to remember to practice, to have alternatives, and to connect. These three things will help in any situation or at least in most situations when a family is in a natural or man-made disaster.

Some people will go to seminars and read books on what to do when a disaster takes place. This is a good thing because it means that one is willing to educate themselves and stay informed. However, when the time comes, it will be difficult to do anything under pressure because a person will be stuck never having done the things they have read about.

These practice drills can be as simple as teaching a young child how to dial 911 and practicing with them so that they get it right. It also means using opportunities whether day or night to practice fire drills so that their family is prepared if and when a fire does occur in the home. These are simple but powerful things that anyone can do to help their loved ones.

There should also be different plans in place just in case one plan does not work. Sometimes a person might think that they do not have to go the extra mile when planning for a difficult situation. One has to realize that there is never a predictable moment when it comes to disasters of any kind. One might have a plan in place that is designed to work one situation, but it may not work in another.

If they have a place where the family could meet at home, they should have an alternative place to meet in another area if a loved one is not able to meet at home for whatever reason. They should also have an alternative exit route in case the original escape is not usable. There should always be secondary preparations in place of which everyone in the family is aware of.

In addition to not having an alternative plan of some kind, some people do not take the time to connect with other people and plan with them. They do not take the time to talk to their neighbors and find out what they are doing to prepare for emergencies. In other cases, a person might think and even talk to someone about having a plan, but they might decide not to follow through with getting together to do so.

It is also a good thing when people work together during difficult situations. The more people there are that help each other, the easier it is for everyone. This is why a person should take the time to get to know their neighbors, so when it is time to take action, they will know who to reach out to without hesitation. However, most people are quite helpful even with strangers when a situation calls for it.

There are many different types of disasters that one can prepare for. Families need to work as a team to make sure that everyone knows what to do without having to worry about the specifics. One can be prepared for anything, but they cannot just plan and then forget it.
