How To Deal When Your Child Goes To College

By Stephanie Luckey

Your child just graduated from High School. When you take stock of your emotions you realize that your happiness is also joined by a feeling of longing. They are going off to college in a few months and you only have very little time left with them before they leave the nest. Although they wont be relying on you as much for day to day dealings, they will still need you to help them grow, and keep them safe. Although they may be leaving your house with set rules, there are a number of ways to keep your child safe and sound. They will need your guidance more than ever for the following reasons.

They will be meeting a large amount of people in a short amount of time. College dorm rooms are a melting pot of many different personalities in a small space. They will not get along with some of these personalities, and may have a difficult time deciding who is worth their time. Most students will be desperate for friends the first few months of college and thus some bad seeds may attach themselves to your child. It's good to know who they are talking to and getting to know the best so you can help if drama emerges.

They will be going to parties. Alcohol and drugs will be in their eyesight and it is important for them to understand do's and don'ts of alcohol.

Dating and the opposite sex will be around. They will have to make tough decisions and be presented with issues they have never encountered.

Outside of the social stress they will have more school work than they have ever known. Stress will be a part of their life.

They will be going through a lot the next few years and will look to you for guidance through it all. They need you more than ever.

Whilst giving them space and freedom make sure they know you are always there for them. They will be taking you up on the offer!

Cheers and goodluck!

Steph
