Don't Sleep On Video Marketing

By James Johnson

Video has become a huge asset to businesses in this new media age. The rapid acceleration of camera technology has put the power of video into every phone and point-and-shoot camera. We have already seen entire internet sitcoms and television commercials shot using smartphones. Nothing establishes a connection with your audience quite like video, so here are a few uses for video that you may have overlooked.

Video Resume: Anyone still actively seeking employment knows that it is important to stand out from the crowd. Sure, your resume should include a splash of color and language that appeals to the hiring manager, but why not send along a video that gives the manager a taste of your personality and work ethic. You don't want your video to come across as cheesy, so have someone interview you about why your work is important to you and edit the clips together in a short 1 to 2 minute video.

Documentary Style Promotional Video: I do see these come out from small businesses occasionally and I love these videos. They are fun to shoot and can carry so much value in a small package. I have noticed that when I find these videos and trace them back to their company's website, the businesses always seem to be thriving. Only a few times has a "doco promo" video led me to a struggling business. I am not sure if this is attributed to the mindset of successful business owners or the success of doc style promos. What I do know, is that these videos are the best way I know of to tell a story and make an impact. Tell us why your business exists, what it stands for, show us beautiful shots of the office, people, product, and culture.

Customer Support: There is no better way to respond to your customers, than with a personalized video that addresses your customers problems. That personal touch goes a long way in not just solving the customer's problem, but building trust also. I have seen companies do this with no editing, simply turn on a camera and record a response. If the response is genuine, then the production value is almost of no importance. Just be sure the audio is good.

Video can seem intimidating at first, but once you know your editing software and have a workflow, video can be shot and edited in no time. It is this fear of not knowing how to do video, that prevents people from trying. I am glad that I jumped in because it has changed my business completely. I have enjoyed video so much, that I have been operating a video production company for 3 years and I incorporate video into all of my side projects.
