Common Sense Alternative Media In America

By Miranda Sweeney

When it comes to censorship, it can often be difficult to determine whether or not some programming is okay for children of a specific age. While there are often ratings on different games and movies, television shows have no such ratings. One reason groups like the Common Sense Alternative Media exist is to assure children are watching age appropriate television, playing and using age appropriate apps and games and watching age appropriate movies.

The organization's mission is to advocate, educate and rate programming for children, teens and families. The organization not only provides information on movies and television programming but also on apps, books, games, websites, newsletters, newszines and other publications.

The organizational website provides a great wealth of information. An "Editor's Pick, " section provides a list of what the website creators consider the best apps, books, games, movies television shows and other media which is updated regularly. Information on privacy and net etiquette can also be found on the site.

Videos provide insight into movies in theaters and those available on Netflix and other rental sites. Advice and educational videos are available on a number of topics upon request. A parents and educator blog provides a space for educators and parents to discuss any issues which may be of concern.

The organization became well known after having been in the news related to the leak that Congress wanted to take over the internet. Whether true, or not, talking about government intentions in public with an individual or group is never a good idea. One reason this is the case is because there could be others listening to the conversation.

Censorship is, has and always will be a controversial issue. It is also an issue based on personal preference. When moving into the space of other human beings, it is still nice to be polite. Most often, one of the primary complaints is against people using bad language. If people can start behaving appropriately when in crowds of mixed age, size and race, it would be a far better world.

When it comes to children, the overall health and well being of the children is what matters most. Parents are responsible for seeing to it that children when in mixed company are well behaved. After the age of twelve, it is often necessary to determine fault based on a review of the actions and people present at the time.

When a child lives in harmony and balance with body, mind and spirit, most often the child is a healthy one. A child needs the guidance and direction of the parents to assure proper behavior in school and society at large. A plethora of documents on the internet can provide some great ideas on how to reward positive behavior while overlooking negative type behaviors in teens and younger children. Most who have rare but necessary parental attention and love grow up to be outstanding members of society.
